Where does technology come from and where is it heading?
Is our life dominated by “technology” that has been developing all too rapidly? When we open our eyes in the morning nowadays, the rst thing we do is no longer brushing our teeth and washing our faces but to swipe our phone screens. A lot of people can live without a social life (i.e. the homebody community), but they cannot live without social media and their applications (video game communities, Facebook, Line, WeChat, etc.) These contemporary social phenomena have been receiving more and more attention and are being discussed today; and they collectively represent a crucial topic as mankind enters a new era.
Artists have always incorporated their foresights into their works. Digital multimedia artists employ their creative work and imagination to constantly fuel the development of technology application (from 4K to 8K, AR to VR and all the other interactive technologies). Today, artists not only continue marching forward in terms of their techniques, they have begun exploring issues of a deeper level. Regarding this, CYBER-HUG has focused on their ideas about and insights into the future life.
Curators have a responsibility to formulate perspectives and propose questions. CYBER-HUG seeks to illustrate the contemporary development of digital multimedia art in various levels and aspects. Meanwhile, it also discusses the trends of thinking in contemporary society. Through artworks by nineteen artists and art collectives, the exhibition demonstrates the complex, interactive relationship between “giving hugs” and “receiving hugs,” and further considers the vast array of new perspectives, questions, ideas and possibilities involved in multiple mutual systems, such as the relationship between people and technology, the connection and integration between different technologies, and the intervening action and cross-disciplinary efforts of individuals. These topics have been incorporated into this technology festival in the hope to initiate dialogues between the viewers and the viewed as well as more discussion and contemplation on related issues and technology.
The industry sector has been drawing inspiration from and glimpsing into the future through artistic creativity. The exhibition has specially invited the industry sector to publish works that serve the life of the public and can be put into practical use. Such endeavors display the interconnectedness and mutual influences in creativity and concepts that characterize the relationship between technology application industry and technological multimedia art. Moreover, the exhibition assumes the form of a festival to engage the public for a better understanding about ideas and concepts that the organizer aims to convey while communicating the curatorial perspectives and questions to a wider extent. The Taoyuan Art x Technology Festival (TAxT) is not merely a “digital multimedia art exhibition”; instead, it is a gateway for the public to become engaged in the profound exploration and in-depth dialogue about multifaceted topics regarding “technology application,” “digital life,” “future humanity” and “industry development.”
